Japan New Prime Minister: LDP’s Sanae Takaichi becomes first female PM

Sanae Takaichi has been elected Japan’s first female prime minister, winning votes in both the lower and upper houses. A close ally of the late Shinzo Abe, she assumes office amid political upheaval after the LDP ended its 26-year coalition with Komeito. To secure her position, she formed a new coalition with the Japan Innovation Party, which now expects her to deliver on agreements including reducing Diet members, cutting social insurance, and considering tax reforms. Takaichi faces challenges from both opposition and coalition partners, while addressing rising household prices. She will deliver her policy speech on October 24 and meet US President Donald Trump next week.
