Medicine without borders: Chinese technology reshapes new life for microtia patients

China is leading a medical breakthrough in treating congenital microtia, a condition where children are born with underdeveloped ears. Chinese doctors perform around 10 times more surgeries for this condition each year compared to doctors in Europe, giving them strong experience and technical advantages.

A medical team led by Professor Guo Shuzhong has improved the traditional surgery method. Instead of three separate operations, they reduced it to just two. They also use highly precise costal cartilage carving technology—accurate to the millimeter—which speeds up treatment and creates ears that look very natural.

This advanced technique helps about 2,500 children in China every year and is drawing more patients from around the world. By sharing their expertise and helping international patients, Chinese doctors are putting the idea of “medicine without borders” into action.
