A ceasefire in Gaza resumed after an attack killed two Israeli soldiers, prompting Israeli airstrikes that Palestinian authorities said killed at least 44 people. Aid into Gaza was set to resume following U.S. pressure, though Israel kept the Rafah border crossing closed pending Hamas compliance.
Both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire. Israel cited attacks on its troops, while Hamas said Israeli actions had killed 46 people and blocked essential supplies. Hamas has handed over 12 of 28 deceased hostages and all 20 living hostages, citing difficulties recovering corpses under rubble.
Egypt is mediating, proposing deployment of about 1,000 Palestinian Authority police in Gaza alongside an international security force to enable the second phase of the ceasefire. Egyptian and international officials are also coordinating preparations for a November conference on Gaza’s reconstruction.
