Chinese President Xi Jinping sent condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba over the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama. Xi praised Murayama as a just politician and a long-time supporter of China-Japan friendship.
He highlighted Murayama’s 1995 statement, in which Murayama acknowledged Japan’s wartime aggression and issued an apology. Xi said the spirit of that statement should be upheld, and expressed hope that Japan will work with China to respect history, strengthen mutual trust, and advance bilateral relations.
