A document supporting the recently agreed-upon Gaza ceasefire deal was signed in Sharm el-Sheikh by the four mediating countries: Egypt, the U.S. (represented by President Donald Trump), Turkey, and Qatar. The summit, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and President Trump, brought together leaders from over 20 countries to discuss issues like Gaza’s governance, security, and reconstruction, though neither Israel nor Hamas attended. President Sisi hailed the agreement as “a glimmer of hope” for a new era of peace, stressing the need to implement all its phases, ultimately leading to the two-state solution. Trump celebrated the deal, calling it “the greatest deal of them all,” as the exchange of prisoners and hostages was successfully carried out. While the agreement successfully halted a major offensive, formidable challenges persist, including securing a lasting ceasefire, determining the fate of the remaining dead and missing Israeli hostages, and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where aid agencies are urgently calling for massive deliveries of supplies and fuel. Questions also remain regarding Gaza’s future governance and Hamas’s refusal to disarm.
