Russian President Vladimir Putin told Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that fragments from detonated Russian missiles may have caused the crash of an Azerbaijani passenger jet in December 2024, and confirmed Russia will pay compensation.
During their meeting, Putin explained that at the time of the crash, Russia was tracking three Ukrainian drones crossing its border and that “technical malfunctions” in Russia’s air defense system may have been a factor. He stated that two missiles exploded near the plane, possibly through self-destruction, and the resulting fragments likely damaged the aircraft.
Putin assured Aliyev that Russia would handle all aspects of the tragic circumstances, including compensation payments and a legal assessment of officials’ actions. Aliyev thanked Putin for overseeing the objective investigation into the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190, which killed 38 of the 67 people on board.
