Beijing Declaration, 30 years on: China continues to advance women’s rights, development

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—the global road map for gender equality—China is set to host the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, the first in a decade. The summit aims to accelerate objectives like those China has pursued through its national policies, which have resulted in millions of women lifted out of poverty, dramatic drops in maternal mortality, and high female representation in education. Internationally, China has actively promoted women’s rights by contributing millions to UN Women, establishing the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education, and funding development projects in dozens of countries, while acknowledging that significant global challenges still remain.
