Myanmar 2025 “World Maritime Day” Conference Sub-Forum Held in Yangon

On September 25, 2025, the workshop on “Sharing Experiences of Challenges and Resilience in Myanmar’s Port Projects,” a sub-forum of Myanmar’s “World Maritime Day” conference, was jointly held in Yangon by CITIC Myanmar, China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC), and the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD).

Over 70 participants attended the workshop from various organizations, including the Myanmar Department of Marine Administration, Myanmar Port Authority, Myanmar Maritime University, Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone Management Committee, Tianjin Research Institute for Water Transport Engineering, Hohai University, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) Third Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd., CCCC Fourth Harbor Engineering Institute, and Shandong Port Group.

 

In his opening speech, Mr. Ma Chuanfu, Deputy General Manager of CITIC Myanmar, stated that Myanmar’s port industry plays a key role in promoting regional connectivity and economic development. He noted that Myanmar is located in the Eurasian seismic zone, and natural disasters such as earthquakes pose significant challenges to the safe and stable operation of port infrastructures. He expressed the hope that by exchanging experiences and engaging in mutual learning regarding port design, construction, and operation, the resilience of port construction and operations can be enhanced. While advancing the preliminary work for the Kyauk Phyu project, Mr. Ma also emphasized that CITIC Myanmar has actively supported local communities and paid close attention to local livelihoods and the natural environment. He affirmed the commitment to developing the Kyauk Phyu project responsibly and sustainably, working together with the people of Myanmar and various sectors of society to create new possibilities.

 

The Chief Engineer of the Myanmar Port Authority, U Nay Myo Nyunt, expressed gratitude to CITIC Myanmar, China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC), and the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) for hosting the workshop and provided a brief introduction to the current state of Myanmar’s port industry. He also encouraged increased collaboration across various sectors to enhance the service capabilities of Myanmar’s ports. The Director of the Legal and Technical Standards Department from Myanmar’s Department of Marine Administration, U Hla Myo Kyaw, stated that the knowledge and experiences shared during this workshop would contribute to the development of Myanmar’s port and maritime industries.
