On September 20 and 21, the cultural performance celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar was held at the National Theater in Yangon. Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Ma Jia, Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin, Union Minister for Education Dr. Chaw Chaw Sein, top diplomats of China and the other countries in Myanmar as well as over 2,0000 representatives from different sectors attended the two-day event.

The event was guided and supported by the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture of Myanmar, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture Radio Television and Tourism, Zhejiang Wuju Opera Art Research Institute (Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe) and other relevant institutes or organizations. The unique items such as Lyu Bu Tries the House, The Goddess of Heaven Scatters Flowers, Divergent Path and Three Triumphs Over the Skeletal Demon are full of Chinese cultural charm, and their melodious singing and colorful acting skills have deeply touched the audience. As an item of national intangible cultural heritage of China with a history of 500 years, Wuju Opera carries profound cultural heritage and national sentiments, and its popularity and influence in China and across the world are constantly rising.

Civilizations are enriched by exchanges and diversified by mutual learning. The artists of Myanmar performed two excerpts of the Ramayana classic play, namely, Rama Pursuing the Enchanted Golden Deer and Sita’s Rejection of Dasagiri Courtship. The marvelous combination of the music and dance of the classic play vividly interpreted the civilization and national customs of Myanmar and its neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. The special performance jointly launched by the artists of China and Myanmar was very grand in scale, exquisite in performing art, and abundant in national features, thus composing again a new story of ancient civilizations shining on each other and prospering together through dialogue and exchange.

China Cultural Center in Yangon, State High School of Arts (Yangon) of Myanmar and other institutes also set up cultural promotion platforms in the National Theater. Before and after the performance, a large number of attendees gathered there and taking away “Hello! China” publications, or experienced on the spot the traditional intangible cultural heritage items of the two countries, such as weaving, embroidery, sugar painting, paper cutting, hand drawing and Thanaka traditions. They together created a vivid and lively atmosphere of cross-cultural exchanges.
