Senior officials of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) condemned upcoming joint military drills by the United States, South Korea and Japan, state media reported Sunday. Seoul will begin two exercises on Monday: Freedom Edge, a trilateral outdoor drill, and Iron Mace, a tabletop exercise simulating a nuclear-attack response.
Kim Yo Jong, a senior Workers’ Party of Korea official, called the U.S.–South Korea nuclear deterrence guidelines a dangerous provocation, while Pak Jong Chon, vice-chairman of the party’s Central Military Commission, described the drills as a “nuclear war rehearsal” and the most offensive in scale and nature to date. Both warned the moves threaten regional stability and vowed that the DPRK would deliver intensified countermeasures if such actions persist.
