The 2025 Golden Panda Awards opened on Saturday evening in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, celebrating film, television, animation and documentaries from around the world. Jury president Chen Kaige highlighted the event as a platform for cultural dialogue, stressing that true artistic growth comes through exchange and mutual respect.
In the documentary category, Norway’s A New Kind of Wilderness won Best Documentary, while Chinese director Gao Song received Best Director for My Hometown Across the Ocean. In animation, the Chinese feature Ne Zha 2 took Best Animation, with CHANG AN winning Best Animated Image and Brazil’s Tainá and the Amazon’s Guardians awarded Best Visual Effects.
The TV drama category saw She and Her Girls, inspired by the life of Chinese educator Zhang Guimei, win both Best TV Drama and Best Screenplay. Tang Yan was named Best Actress for Blossom Shanghai, while Francis Ng won Best Actor for Escape From the Trilateral Slopes. British director James Strong took Best Director for Mr Bates vs The Post Office.
In film, Italy’s There’s Still Tomorrow won Best Picture, with the late Chinese director Pema Tseden honored as Best Director for Snow Leopard. Zhu Yilong won Best Actor for Only the River Flows and Brazil’s Denise Weinberg Best Actress for The Blue Trail.
Special Jury Awards included recognition for Hotline Beijing as the International Communication Award for Chinese Stories, while CGTN received the Special Contribution Award for International Communication.
