Asia News Wrap: Thailand gets a new prime minister, and more

Thailand: Anutin Charnvirakul was elected prime minister after winning big in parliament, ending a week of political deadlock. He beat the Shinawatra family’s candidate after a court removed former PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Anutin struck a deal with the opposition People’s Party, promising a constitutional referendum and fresh elections within four months.

Nepal: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned after deadly protests over a social media ban left 25 people dead and more than 600 injured. Protesters stormed parliament, burning government buildings and vehicles.

Japan: Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stepped down following election losses that cost his party its majority. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party will hold an emergency leadership vote on October 4.

Bangladesh: The country is battling a severe outbreak of dengue and chikungunya. Hospitals are overwhelmed, with more than 33,800 dengue cases and 132 deaths reported this year.
