The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran reached an agreement Tuesday on practical steps to resume nuclear inspections, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi announced after signing documents with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in Cairo. The move comes as France, Britain, and Germany (the E3) threaten to trigger a “snapback” of UN sanctions unless Iran restores inspections, accounts for its enriched uranium stockpile, and resumes nuclear talks with the United States.
The framework deal is seen as a step toward meeting European conditions, though uncertainty remains over whether it will be enough to prevent sanctions by the end of the month. Araqchi warned that if the UN sanctions are reinstated, Iran would void the agreement. Tehran halted cooperation with the IAEA following Israeli-U.S. strikes on its nuclear facilities and the killing of Iranian nuclear scientists in June but has since maintained contact with the agency.
