Israel carried out an unprecedented airstrike in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, targeting senior Hamas officials during ceasefire talks. Hamas said its delegation survived, but six people, including the son of its chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, were killed. Israel confirmed responsibility, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling it an independent Israeli operation aimed at leaders linked to the October 7 attacks. The strike, involving more than a dozen warplanes, marked Israel’s first direct attack inside Qatar and threatened to derail ongoing mediation efforts.
The raid drew swift international condemnation. Qatar denounced the strike as a violation of sovereignty, confirmed one of its security officers was killed, and suspended peace negotiations. President Donald Trump said he felt “very badly” about the attack, calling it unhelpful, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union labeled it a breach of international law. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, and other regional states also condemned the strike. The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting Wednesday in response.
