Gaza City, home to nearly 1 million people, is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, UNICEF said Thursday. Tess Ingram, UNICEF communication manager for the Middle East and North Africa, described the city as “a city of fear, flight and funerals,” where children are increasingly at risk from violence, starvation, and displacement.
Over nine days, Ingram met families who had fled their homes multiple times, including children separated from parents and those injured by shrapnel. Only 44 of 92 UNICEF-supported nutrition centers are still operating, leaving thousands of malnourished children without essential care.
UNICEF called on Israel to review its rules of engagement to protect children and allow aid, urged armed groups to release hostages, and appealed to the international community to act to prevent further catastrophe. Israeli forces now control about 40 percent of Gaza City, and ongoing shelling has killed at least 53 people, mostly in the northern areas of the city.
