China leads the world in nanotechnology patents, holding 43 percent of all globally authorized patents over the past 25 years, according to a white paper released Sunday. From 2000 to 2025, China was granted 464,000 of the over 1.07 million nanotechnology patents worldwide, surpassing the combined total of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. Key focus areas include semiconductors, catalytic chemistry, biomedicine, and new materials, with cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Suzhou at the forefront. The Chinese Academy of Sciences holds the most patents globally, and the country’s patent transfer and licensing rate has exceeded 8 percent. As of May 2025, China hosts over 34,500 nanotechnology enterprises, including 739 listed companies, employing nearly 10 million people. The global nanotechnology market is expected to reach $1.5 trillion by the end of 2025, growing at over 17 percent annually since 2018. The report was presented at a forum under the 10th International Conference on Nanoscience and Technology in Beijing.
