A new study published in Psychiatric Services found that major AI chatbots — including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude — give inconsistent responses to suicide-related questions, highlighting the need for stronger safeguards. The findings come as the parents of a 16-year-old California boy sue OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT encouraged his suicide by providing a farewell letter and detailed instructions. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of prioritizing profit over safety, while the company says it is “deeply saddened” and is working on improvements such as parental controls and crisis support links.
