U.S. declines to participate in UN review of its human rights record

The United States has told the UN it will not take part in its upcoming Universal Periodic Review on November 6 in Geneva, breaking from a process all 193 UN member states normally undergo. The UN Human Rights Office said it regrets Washington’s decision to skip the peer review, calling the UPR a key forum for dialogue on human rights. The U.S. had previously taken part in three review cycles since 2010, but its withdrawal from the fourth cycle marks a rare move. The UN said it will continue engaging with the U.S. government and other stakeholders on human rights issues despite the decision.
