From crayons to laptops, tariffs push U.S. school expenses higher

Back-to-school costs in the U.S. have surged, with families paying more for supplies, food, electronics, clothing, and transportation. Analysts say President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imports, particularly from China, have fueled the hikes—adding what parents call a “school tax.” A typical school kit now costs 7.3% more, with some items rising over 40%, while food and electronics have seen steep increases.

Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act has also reduced federal aid, capped student loans, and cut meal subsidies, raising concerns that higher education will become less accessible, especially for low-income and minority students. International student enrollment has dropped 13% under Trump, further straining U.S. universities.
