Elon Musk’s companies, xAI and X, filed a major antitrust lawsuit in Texas against Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of colluding to block competition in AI and smartphones. The complaint argues that Apple’s deal to make ChatGPT the exclusive generative AI on iPhones unfairly shuts out rivals like Musk’s Grok, giving ChatGPT access to “billions of user prompts” while Apple allegedly manipulates App Store rankings to its advantage. Musk’s firms claim Apple controls 65% of the U.S. smartphone market and OpenAI dominates 80% of the chatbot space, calling the partnership an illegal monopoly.
The lawsuit seeks billions in damages and a court order to end the arrangement. OpenAI dismissed the case as part of Musk’s “pattern of harassment,” while the dispute adds to Musk’s long-running feud with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a fellow co-founder before Musk’s 2018 exit.
