Trump expresses hope to meet Kim Jong Un this year in meeting with ROK President Lee Jae-myung

U.S. President Donald Trump said he hopes to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again later this year, stressing that he has a “very good relationship” with him and sees “tremendous potential” in North Korea. Trump previously met Kim three times during his first term—in Singapore (2018), Hanoi (2019), and at the Korean border village of Panmunjom (2019).

The remarks came as Trump hosted South Korean President Lee Jae-myung for their first meeting. The talks happened under some strain: Trump had earlier posted vague complaints about political turmoil in South Korea, later calling it a misunderstanding. While both countries signed a trade deal in July that spared South Korean exports from harsher U.S. tariffs, disputes remain over nuclear energy, military spending, and South Korea’s pledge of $350 billion in U.S. investments.

During the meeting, Lee praised Trump and even mentioned reading his book The Art of the Deal to prepare. He urged Trump to continue engaging with North Korea. Asked about reducing U.S. troops in South Korea, Trump avoided giving a direct answer but hinted that Seoul might let the U.S. take ownership of land used for bases, possibly referring to Camp Humphreys. Trump also repeated his view of South Korea as a “money machine” benefiting from U.S. military protection.
