White House launches official TikTok account

The White House has launched its first official TikTok account, debuting with a short video that quickly drew thousands of followers. The move comes as TikTok faces a looming U.S. ban unless it secures a non-Chinese buyer by mid-September, following Donald Trump’s decision to extend the deadline by 90 days.

Although Trump previously pushed for a ban, he has since changed stance, saying the platform helped him win young voters during the 2024 election. Trump himself has over 110 million TikTok followers, far more than his presence on X (108.5 million) or Truth Social (10.6 million). By contrast, the White House has much smaller followings on X (2.4 million) and Instagram (9.3 million).
