The Guangdong Provincial Archives has publicly released historical materials donated by Japanese scholar Seiya Matsuno, documenting atrocities committed by the Japanese army in southern China during World War II.
Unveiled ahead of the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender, the donation includes rare photo collections published by the Japanese army itself, showing the 18th Division’s crimes in Guangdong (1938) and southern China (1939–1942). The images, recorded by the perpetrators, capture scenes of devastation and resistance slogans left by Chinese soldiers and civilians, reflecting a strong will to resist.
Matsuno also provided Japanese-language documents and telegrams revealing Japanese counterfeit currency operations in wartime Hong Kong, which were authenticated, translated, and released. He has previously donated evidence related to Unit 731 and chemical warfare in China.
