World War II film Dongji Rescue premieres in Australia

The Chinese consulate general in Melbourne hosted a reception Wednesday for the World War II film Dongji Rescue, ahead of its Australian release, marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Over 200 attendees watched the film, which is based on the 1942 Lisbon Maru incident, when Chinese fishermen saved over 300 British prisoners of war from a sinking Japanese ship.

Chinese Consul-General Fang Xinwen highlighted China’s major role in the Eastern battlefield and its solidarity with anti-fascist allies like Australia and Britain. Other speakers stressed the importance of remembering history, preserving peace, and valuing unity.

Viewers described the film as deeply moving, praising its depiction of bravery, compassion, and the belief that every human life is worth saving, regardless of nationality or background.
