Typhoon Podul made its first landfall Wednesday afternoon in China’s Taiwan region and is expected to hit the coast between Xiamen in Fujian Province and Shantou in Guangdong Province late Wednesday night to early Thursday morning, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said. Forecasts project the second landfall to be at strong tropical storm or typhoon strength, with wind speeds of 25 to 33 meters per second.
Afterward, the storm will move west-northwest, gradually weakening but bringing heavy to extreme rainfall over the next two days to Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, and surrounding areas. Authorities have warned residents to secure property, stock supplies, stay indoors during the storm, and remain alert for landslides, mudslides, and other hazards triggered by the intense rain.
