Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he will not compromise the interests of Indian farmers, dairy producers, and fishermen, even if it means facing a heavy cost. This came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, effective August 28, as a penalty for India continuing to buy Russian oil.
Modi did not directly mention the U.S. or the failed trade talks but strongly defended India’s position. Trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed over disputes regarding India’s agricultural sector and its Russian oil purchases.
India’s Foreign Ministry called the U.S. tariff increase “extremely unfortunate” and vowed to protect national interests, describing the tariff hike as illogical and temporary. The tariffs are part of the U.S. effort to pressure Russia amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
