The Kremlin announced that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a summit in the coming days, with a target date set for next week and the venue agreed in principle. This will be the first meeting between sitting U.S. and Russian presidents since June 2021 and comes as Trump seeks to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Previous peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv have stalled, with Russia demanding Ukrainian troop withdrawal from contested areas and an end to Western military support. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed calls for a direct meeting with Putin, saying only leader-level talks can advance peace, but Russia has not responded to proposals for a trilateral meeting with the U.S.
The summit announcement followed a visit to Moscow by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. Russia’s stock market rose 4.5% after the news. Meanwhile, Putin is meeting the UAE president, with the UAE rumored as a possible summit venue. The conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has killed tens of thousands, with Moscow still resisting calls for a ceasefire.
