Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior security officials to finalize a new Gaza strategy, reportedly favoring a full military takeover of the territory. Despite international pressure for a ceasefire, truce talks with Hamas have collapsed. Over the past day alone, at least 80 people were killed in Israeli shelling, and eight died from starvation, as Gaza faces a worsening humanitarian crisis.
The current conflict, ongoing since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2 million residents. Hunger is now widespread, with 188 deaths from starvation reported since the war began.
Netanyahu stated that Israel’s goals remain defeating Hamas, releasing hostages, and ensuring Gaza poses no future threat. While Israeli forces moved into central Gaza this week, it’s unclear if this signals a broader offensive. Some officials and analysts believe the threat of a full takeover may be a tactic to pressure Hamas.
The UN called the reports “deeply alarming,” and the Palestinian Foreign Ministry urged urgent international intervention. U.S. President Donald Trump declined to comment on Israel’s plans, saying only that the U.S. is focused on getting aid to civilians.
