Cambodian and Thai troops exchanged fire on Thursday at a disputed border area near ancient temples, with both sides accusing the other of starting the clash. Cambodia claimed Thai forces made an unprovoked incursion, while Thailand said Cambodian troops fired first after deploying a drone and bringing in heavy weapons.
The incident happened amid rising tensions, as Thailand had just recalled its ambassador and planned to expel Cambodia’s envoy, following injuries to Thai soldiers from landmines. Cambodia responded by downgrading diplomatic ties and pulling its staff from Bangkok. Both countries blame each other for the escalation, and the situation remains sensitive.
