Thailand downgraded its diplomatic ties with Cambodia on Wednesday after a landmine near the border injured five Thai soldiers, one seriously. Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai recalled the Thai ambassador from Cambodia, expelled the Cambodian ambassador, and ordered a formal protest letter. Thailand accused Cambodia of violating the Ottawa Convention by planting new mines.
Tensions have risen along the border since a deadly clash in May. Cambodia denied the allegations, stating the Thai patrol strayed from agreed routes and entered uncleared mine areas. Cambodia emphasized its commitment to resolving the dispute peacefully and through international law.
