Xu Huiyan, 19, made history on Saturday by winning China’s first-ever women’s solo technical gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. The reigning world junior champion scored 272.9917 points, building on her recent success after securing four golds at last month’s Artistic Swimming World Cup Super Final in Xi’an.
Belarus’s Vasilina Khandoshka (competing as a neutral athlete) took silver, and Spain’s Iris Tio Casas claimed bronze. Xu also helped China top the team free preliminaries earlier in the day.
In the men’s solo technical event, China’s Guo Muye placed fourth, while Russia’s Aleksandr Maltsev, also competing neutrally, won gold in his solo debut with 251.7133 points. Spain’s Dennis Gonzalez and Mexico’s Diego Carrillo completed the podium.
Maltsev, 30, is a trailblazer in artistic swimming, having previously won silver in the mixed duet at the 2015 World Championships, when men were first allowed to compete in the sport.
