U.S. President Donald Trump stated in an interview that the U.S. is very close to finalizing a trade deal with India and may reach an agreement with the European Union soon, although it’s too early to predict a deal with Canada. His administration is pushing for new trade agreements before August 1, when tariffs on most U.S. imports are set to rise. Trump criticized the EU’s past trade practices but noted they are now more willing to negotiate. Trade talks are ongoing with EU and Indian officials in Washington. Regarding Canada, both Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed a deal is not yet within reach. Trump also suggested he may impose a blanket 10–15% tariff on smaller countries.
