China to host SCO Tianjin summit from August 31 to September 1

The upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, set for August 31 to September 1, will be the largest in the organization’s history, with leaders from over 20 countries and 10 international organizations attending, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

At a foreign ministers’ meeting in Tianjin on July 15, Wang emphasized deepening cooperation and advancing the SCO’s development under the “Shanghai Spirit,” calling for stronger unity, regional security, mutual benefit, and respect for sovereignty. He proposed five priorities for the SCO, including enhancing economic ties, promoting peaceful development, and strengthening supply and innovation chains.

Wang also expressed concerns over Middle East tensions and called for support for Afghanistan’s peace and reconstruction. All attending parties reaffirmed the SCO’s key role in fostering regional stability, opposing unilateralism, defending sovereignty, and promoting dialogue to address global issues. Wang noted that through joint efforts, the SCO is entering a new phase of high-quality development.
