Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on the United States to strengthen its efforts to combat drug and arms trafficking, in response to President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 30% tariff on Mexican imports starting August 1. Trump accused Mexico of failing to stop drug flows and illegal immigration. Sheinbaum defended Mexico’s efforts and stressed the need for shared responsibility, saying both countries must do their part. She expressed hope for a deal to avoid the tariffs and emphasized that any agreement must respect Mexico’s sovereignty. A Mexican delegation is currently in the U.S. for related talks.
