The 2025 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) opened in Beijing on Sunday, bringing together nearly 1,000 global scientists, scholars, and students to explore the latest advancements in mathematics, physics, and information science.
Prominent attendees include four Fields Medalists, three Nobel laureates, and two Turing Award winners. Six renowned scientists, including Steven Chu and David Gross, received the 2025 Basic Science Lifetime Award for their lasting contributions to fundamental science.
ICBS President Shing-Tung Yau emphasized the importance of theoretical breakthroughs and international cooperation in driving technological progress and human civilization. He expressed hope the congress will foster global academic exchange and collaboration.
Initiated in 2023, ICBS is an annual event themed “advancing science for humanity.” This year’s congress features over 500 academic sessions, including keynote lectures and interdisciplinary discussions.
