Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari passed away Sunday in London at age 82, confirmed by current President Bola Tinubu. Buhari died while receiving medical treatment in a London clinic.
Tinubu has instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to bring Buhari’s body back to Nigeria. Buhari, born December 17, 1942, had a long career in the military and politics. He became Nigeria’s first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president when he won the 2015 election and was re-elected in 2019 before handing over power to Tinubu in May 2023.
During his presidency, Buhari focused on security, anti-corruption, and economic diversification, notably fighting Boko Haram and recovering stolen public funds. His tenure included efforts to improve agriculture and infrastructure but faced economic recessions and ongoing security challenges. In honor of Buhari, flags in Nigeria have been ordered flown at half-mast.
