Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel is willing to negotiate a permanent ceasefire in Gaza during a proposed 60-day truce, but only if Hamas disarms and Gaza is fully demilitarized. The proposal, backed by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, includes the release of 10 living and several deceased hostages. However, Hamas accused Netanyahu of obstructing peace by rejecting their offer to release all hostages in exchange for a full halt to Israeli aggression and smooth aid delivery.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces have intensified operations in Gaza, causing more displacement and destruction, especially around Khan Yunis. The UN brought in fuel for the first time in over four months, but said the 75,000 liters delivered are far from sufficient. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that critical services like water and health care could collapse without more supplies and urged an immediate ceasefire.
International criticism is also growing. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accused Israel of committing genocide and called the situation in Gaza one of the darkest events of the 21st century. Spain is pressuring the EU to suspend its agreement with Israel and has officially recognized Palestine since May 2024.
