The U.S. State Department has warned diplomats about attempts to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio using AI technology. A July 3 cable revealed that an impostor contacted at least three foreign ministers, a U.S. senator, and a governor via text, Signal, and voicemail. Though the scam was not sophisticated and ultimately unsuccessful, officials are concerned about rising AI-driven impersonation threats.
The department emphasized that there is no direct cyber threat but warned that sensitive information could be at risk if individuals are deceived. This follows a similar incident in May involving Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and the FBI has also flagged the growing use of AI in such scams. The State Department is actively monitoring the situation and reinforcing cybersecurity measures.
