President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariff announcements has sparked frustration among U.S. trading partners, including the European Union, South Korea, and Japan.
The EU is pushing to finalize a trade framework with the U.S. by August 1 but is struggling to secure immediate tariff relief and a commitment to halt further measures. Current U.S. tariffs on EU goods include 50% on steel, 25% on cars, and 10% on most other exports. A 50% copper tariff and new levies on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals are also expected.
South Korea views Trump’s recent letter as an effective pause on new tariffs and plans to continue negotiations to reach a mutually beneficial deal while addressing U.S. trade deficit concerns.
Japan criticized the new 25% tariff on its goods as “truly regrettable” and said it will keep negotiating to protect its interests. Trump also announced new tariffs on 13 other countries, including 40% on Myanmar and Laos and up to 36% on others like Thailand and Cambodia.
