China is rapidly advancing in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, becoming the second country after the U.S. to reach clinical trial stage for invasive BCI. In June, a Chinese team successfully implanted a BCI in a quadruple amputee, enabling him to play video games using only his thoughts within weeks. The device, developed by Chinese scientists, is coin-sized with ultra-flexible electrodes and implanted via minimally invasive surgery.
Following the breakthrough, China opened its first BCI clinical ward in Beijing to further research and trials. The government is actively supporting BCI development, with new pricing guidelines issued in March to aid clinical adoption and commercialization. These efforts are part of broader reforms promoting advanced technologies like AI and BCIs in healthcare, especially for the elderly.
Experts say China’s rapid progress is backed by a clear national strategy and strong state support, positioning it as a major player in the future of mind-machine innovation.
