Portugal experienced its third hottest June on record in 2025, with temperatures peaking at 46.6°C in Mora—setting a national June record. Experts warn this extreme heat may signal a “new normal” due to climate change, with more frequent and intense early-season heatwaves expected. The heatwave, caused by a North African hot air mass trapped by a “heat dome,” was intensified by dry soils and unusually warm Mediterranean waters. June was also the fourth driest on record. The heatwave led to 69 excess deaths, mostly among the elderly. Forecasts predict continued above-average temperatures in July and August, pointing to a long-term warming trend.
