California, along with 19 other states, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for allegedly sharing Medicaid recipients’ personal health data with immigration authorities. The lawsuit claims this violates federal privacy laws and has caused fear among immigrant communities, leading some to avoid or drop emergency Medicaid coverage.
The lawsuit, led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, argues that giving the Department of Homeland Security access to this sensitive information—particularly for potential use in mass deportations—is illegal and undermines public health efforts. The plaintiffs are demanding an end to the data sharing and the destruction of any data already collected.
Medicaid, which provides health coverage to millions, is meant to protect personal data except in very limited cases. Critics say this move by the Trump administration not only breaks the law but also deters vulnerable people from seeking critical medical care.
