U.S. Senate passes Trump’s ‘big, beautiful’ bill, what’s next?

The U.S. Senate narrowly passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending bill by a 51–50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The legislation includes major tax cuts—especially for the wealthiest Americans—boosts military and immigration enforcement spending, and slashes $930 billion from social programs like Medicaid and food aid. It would also add $3.3 trillion to the national debt and raise the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

Three Republican senators voted against the bill, and several House Republicans have also expressed concerns, particularly over Medicaid cuts. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a slim majority. Trump hopes to sign it into law by July 4.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the top 1% of earners would benefit the most, while nearly 12 million people could lose health insurance. Critics, including Democrats and even Elon Musk, call it a massive blow to healthcare and social safety nets, labeling it “the largest assault on American healthcare in history.”
