Chinese researchers have developed PlantGPT, an AI-powered expert Q&A system focused on plant functional genomics, based on rockcress data. Created by teams from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China Agricultural University, and Tsinghua University, the tool is designed to overcome the limitations of existing biology databases and tools, which struggle with complex data and limited interaction.
Published in Advanced Science, PlantGPT is the first large language model tailored for plant genomics. It aims to improve crop quality, pest resistance, stress adaptation, and agricultural education, while supporting both early-career and senior scientists.
The tool is open-source, user-friendly, and continuously updated, and it is already freely available online. Future plans include expanding its use in synthetic biology and other crop species, marking a significant step in applying AI to agricultural science.
