G7 fails to issue joint statement on Ukraine, Canada commits more aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is leaving the G7 Summit without a joint statement of support for Ukraine or a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, who left early to deal with the Israel-Iran conflict. The G7 countries could not agree on a united stance on the Ukraine war, largely due to Trump’s support for Russian President Putin.

Canada, the summit host, canceled plans for a strong G7 statement on Ukraine after U.S. resistance. Still, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced C$2 billion (about $1.47 billion USD) in new military aid for Ukraine and new sanctions on Russia. However, Canada’s help is limited compared to the U.S., Ukraine’s largest weapons supplier.

Zelenskyy had hoped to secure more weapons with U.S. support. Instead, Canada will issue a solo statement urging more sanctions on Russia and supporting U.S.-led peace efforts. Meanwhile, the Kremlin welcomed Trump’s stance and dismissed the G7 as irrelevant. The G7 did agree on six other statements covering issues like AI, migration, and climate-related topics.
