Cambodian, Thai officials conclude ‘open and positive’ talks over border issues

Cambodian and Thai officials concluded two days of “open and positive” talks in Phnom Penh on Sunday, focusing on border issues through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC). Both sides agreed to send a joint survey team to demarcate border lines at existing markers, emphasizing the importance of the JBC in reducing tensions and making progress on boundary matters. Thailand will host the next Special JBC meeting in September.

However, the talks did not cover four disputed border areas. Cambodia submitted a case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) seeking resolution and urged Thailand to join. Thailand rejected the idea, reaffirming its position that it does not recognize the ICJ’s compulsory jurisdiction and prefers to resolve disputes through bilateral dialogue.

The meeting followed a brief border clash on May 28 that left one Cambodian soldier dead.
