New Earth-sized planet found in habitable zone, boosts Earth 2.0 hunt

Chinese and German scientists have discovered a potential Earth-like planet, Kepler-725c, located in the habitable zone of a sun-like star about 2,472 light-years away. The planet, about 10 times the mass of Earth, may support conditions suitable for life.

The discovery was made using the Transit Timing Variation (TTV) method, which detects planets by observing timing changes in a nearby gas giant’s orbit rather than relying on traditional techniques. Kepler-725c orbits its star every 207.5 days, placing it in a zone where liquid water could exist.

The research, published in Nature Astronomy, was led by scientists from China’s Yunnan Observatories, along with collaborators from Germany and other Chinese institutions. While the planet shows promise for habitability, more research is needed to confirm its potential to support life.
