South Korea’s new president vows economic revival, judgement on martial law

South Korea’s new liberal president, Lee Jae-myung, officially began his term on June 4, 2025, pledging to overcome the recent political crisis caused by a martial law decree and to revive the struggling economy. Lee, a former human rights lawyer, won the election with 49.42% of the vote, defeating conservative rival Kim Moon-soo. He called the election a rejection of former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s failed leadership and pledged to prevent future military coups.

Lee’s immediate focus is on economic recovery, particularly addressing rising living costs and supporting small businesses. He also faces urgent trade negotiations with the U.S. over tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which have affected key industries like autos and steel. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Lee, emphasizing the strong alliance between the two countries. The recent political upheaval, marked by martial law and multiple acting presidents, has left South Korea in a fragile state that Lee aims to stabilize.
