Trump praises Elon Musk as he exits government, says DOGE will continue

Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role in Donald Trump’s administration, holding a press conference in the Oval Office where he appeared with a black eye, dismissed drug abuse allegations, and pledged to remain a “friend and advisor” to the president.

Trump praised Musk’s “incredible service” and gave him a symbolic golden key to the White House, while insisting Musk isn’t truly leaving, saying he’ll remain involved and that “many of the DOGE people” will stay on. The Trump administration plans to make the cost-cutting measures under the DOGE program permanent, though results have fallen short of Musk’s $2 trillion savings goal — with estimates ranging from $170 billion (White House) to just $2 billion (The Atlantic).

The press focused heavily on Musk’s bruised eye, which he claimed came from playing with his young son. He avoided directly addressing allegations from The New York Times that he heavily used ketamine and other drugs during the 2024 campaign.

Musk expressed disappointment in Trump’s new tax-and-spending plans, which he believes undo the savings achieved under DOGE. His departure comes amid struggles at his companies: Tesla faces declining sales and shareholder unrest, while SpaceX has had a series of rocket failures.
