Trump demands ‘names and countries’ of Harvard’s foreign students

U.S. President Donald Trump demanded the names and countries of every international student enrolled at Harvard University, claiming it’s a reasonable request since the government provides Harvard with billions of dollars. His demand came shortly after a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll foreign students. Trump criticized Harvard for not disclosing that nearly 31 percent of its students are from abroad, some from countries unfriendly to the U.S., and accused those countries of not contributing to the students’ education. He also called on Harvard to stop seeking further federal funding. The Department of Homeland Security had announced plans to revoke Harvard’s certification to admit international students, which would have forced current international students to transfer or lose their legal status. Harvard challenged this move in court and won a temporary restraining order. As of fall 2023, international students made up over 27 percent of Harvard’s enrollment, coming from more than 140 countries, and are a significant source of revenue for U.S. universities.
